Students must allow enough time to take a timed test. The last exams of the day are administered one hour prior to closing.

No testing (other than ACCUPLACER) is required to enroll in BIO101, 102, 105, 145, 156 or 181.  However, if you wish to enroll in BIO201 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I) or BIO205 (Microbiology), depending on your background you may need to complete an additional assessment test on biology concepts.

  • If you have already passed BIO156 or BIO 181 with a "C" or better, you may register for BIO201 or 205.
  • If you have taken a year of high school biology and wish to skip the recommended college level general biology course (BIO156 or BIO181) and enroll in BIO201 or 205 at GCC, you are required to take the BIO Assessment Test.  This 40-question test will help you evaluate how well you remember this important information.  If, after taking the test, you still feel you are adequately prepared to enroll in a 200-level BIO course, you will need to discuss your score with an academic advisor and get their signature in order to register.
  • If you have NOT taken a year of high school biology and wish to enroll in BIO201 or 205 directly, you are required to pass a comprehensive 100-question BIO Waiver Test (paper pencil scantron) with at least a 70% score.  Passing the waiver test does not give you course credit, but would allow you to enroll without taking a prior 100-level BIO course.

Course placement sets you up to succeed! The results of any required assessment test will help determine which BIO course is right for you. See further information about BIO placement testing at the Biology Department. Note that BIO156, 181, 201, and 205 also require a minimum reading level (see course descriptions for reading prerequisite requirement). Bio Assessment retest is once every two years.

The major topics covered on the BIO placement tests are outlined in this course description. Prepare for your test by reviewing these concepts in the book, “Biology: Concepts and Connections" (or another general biology textbook).  This book is on reserve in the GCC Library.
