"Baby with the Bathwater" Takes the GCC Stage Nov. 3-11
Issues of gender identity take an absurd spin as the Theatre Arts and Film program stages "Baby with the Bathwater" Nov. 3-11 in the GCC Performing Arts Center.
As director David Seitz sees it, Christopher Durang's 1983 play has gained a whole new layer of meaning as the demographic of transgender students has become more well known. "How difficult it must be for one to feel they are one way when the world around them tells them that they are another," he said. "Although most of us can never truly understand what they must feel and experience, our hope is that this play may shed even a little bit of light on what that struggle may be like."
Through farce and satire, Durang takes on unprepared parents, irresponsible caregivers and misguided educators in the tale of a young man raised as a girl named Daisy. Daisy's damaging upbringing and his lifelong recovery efforts are conveyed in a warped and outlandish comic style.
Performances are Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. General admission is $8, or $5 for students, staff, alumni, and seniors (55 or older). In honor of Veterans Day, admission is free with a military ID on Friday, Nov. 10. Tickets may be purchased online in advance.
