Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally funded program that allows the college to employ you while you earn educational credits. It does NOT pay for tuition. These part-time jobs generally will not exceed twenty (20) hours per week with the rate of pay equal to at least the minimum wage. Read more detailed information on the Department of Educations' Federal Work Study Program web page.

Steps to Finding Employment

  1. After viewing Award Notification of FWS eligibility, visit Career Services to see a list of job openings. Request a Job Referral Form and a New Hire Packet.
  2. Take the Job Referral to the hiring supervisor of the department you are seeking employment from. The supervisor needs to sign the form.
  3. Complete the New Hire Packet and return it to the Employee Resources Department with the Job Referral.
  4. The SFA Office will create a contract online, once all approvals have been done, your supervisor will be notified as to when you may begin working.

Payroll Information

  • The hours must be worked before being paid; the rate depends on the position.
  • Hours worked will be reported electronically through the HRMS system. The supervisor will assist the student with HRMS.
  • Payday is every other Friday during the Fall/Spring semesters. Summer Sessions payday is every other Thursday. Paychecks are disbursed by the Cashier's office or by mail.

Calculation of earnings/hours or projections of the future will be determined by student and supervisor. Your unearned FWS balance is canceled at the end of the award period. Your time punches must be approved by your supervisor based on set payroll deadlines. Failure to follow procedures may cause your termination and/or your future FWS application to be denied.

To Transfer Departments

To transfer to a different department, request another Job Referral Form/Employee Data Form (if you will change supervisors/ departments) at Career Services. Then submit that form to the Human Resources office.
