Astronomy

Professional astronomers follow the stars, literally! This exciting, yet competitive, field attracts hard-working students who enjoy observation and problem solving, and are willing to conduct detailed research for the possibility of scientific discovery.

A majority of astronomers work at colleges and universities, either in faculty positions or managing observatories and laboratories. In addition to teaching, they conduct research and publish their findings. Universities require a Ph.D. for faculty positions. Other employers include the federal government (like NASA), private business like the aerospace industry and public services like science museums.
