SPORTS PERFORMANCE LAB DEFINITIONS
 
VO2max Test
 
VO2max measures how efficient your cardiorespiratory system is at utilizing oxygen. It is a maximal test to exhaustion. This is a common test among endurance athletes, providing valuable training information such as maximal heart rate, ventilatory threshold (an estimation of lactate threshold) and heart rate training zones. This information can be used to measure your baseline aerobic fitness level and then measure your progress over time to determine whether your training was effective.
 
Lactate Threshold
 
Athletes are continuously producing and clearing lactate from their muscles. Lactate threshold is the point at which lactate begins to markedly accumulate in the blood and gives an indication of muscle metabolism. A blood lactate test will determine the heart rate at which the athletes lactate sharply increases. This information can be used to adjust training programs so the threshold can be raised closer to the VO2max.  (Note: small blood samples are taken from the finger during a 30-minute run on the treadmill). 
 
Body Composition Analysis
 
Body composition analysis measures your percentage of body fat using skinfold calipers or bioelectrical impedance. This assessment will tell you how much of your total body weight is fat weight versus lean weight (muscle, bone, skin, organs and water). This can help to determine whether you need to lose or gain weight and will help to monitor your progress. You can get a single test or sign up for multiple tests to monitor your body composition changes over time. 
 
Anaerobic Power – Wingate Bike Test
 
The Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) is a 30-second all-out anaerobic sprint test performed on a cycle ergometer. This test will show peak anaerobic power generated during the test, total anaerobic capacity or the total amount of work accomplished over the 30-second exercise bout, and anaerobic fatigue, or the percentage decline in power compared with the peak power output.
